Comparing Pocket PC and Palm Handheld
By Darrin Ngo

Handheld devices like Pocket PC play a very important role in both businesses and professionals. To be honest, it is almost impossible not to see an individual walking the down the streets of business centers not holding a Pocket PC.

A Pocket PC is a handheld device that runs on an operating system. It can run on Windows CE OS or the usual suite of Windows Mobile 5.0. According to Microsoft, Pocket PC is handheld device that allows users to browse the Net, organize files, send and receive email, manage contacts and to-do lists. In addition, the device enables the user to play MP3s, games, exchange SMS with MSN Messenger as well carry photos and video clips.

In order for handheld device to be called a Pocket PC, it should run on Windows CE (mobile edition) or it should come bundled with a suite of ROM applications including a touchscreen pad and a set of different hardware buttons. In addition, it should be based on either ARM processors, Intel CPU, SH3 CPU or MIPS CPU.

In 2000, Microsoft introduced the first Pocket PC which comprised of a combination of Windows CE 3.0 OS with an improved user interface, different applications intended for a Pocket PC, Wi-Fi Internet and much more.

There have been comparisons made

between Pocket PC and Palm. Pocket PC is less popular than Palm because of its high price and complexity of use. When Pocket PC was launched, it cost $500 while Palm cost only $200. A lot of people were not willing to spend that amount on a PDA. Fortunately, Pocket PC shaved-off $300 from its original price so that most people can afford it.

Palm is easier to use than Pocket PC. However, if you are not new to computers then using a Pocket PC is just a piece of cake. A Pocket PC does not run on Windows applications - this is the biggest misconception of users. Pocket PC will not run on Windows PCs and vice versa. Even though most programs used for Pocket PC were developed under the same source codes that Windows PCs use.

In spite of the comparisons made between Pocket PC and Palm, most developers from the two companies are trying to create desktop and PDA versions of their products. By doing this, information can be inputted on of the two and information can be synchronized with each other.

If you are having problems deciding on what brand to buy then it is best to get feedback from those who own a Pocket PC and a Palm. Then, you will have a better understanding of the two products in terms of the functions that you need.
